“Every coder owns THE DEBT
of every fix they chose to FORGET.”
Technical debt is not automatically bad.
Sometimes, developers knowingly choose a temporary solution to meet a deadline, validate an idea or restore production quickly.
The real problem begins when temporary becomes permanent.
🔸 TLDR
Technical debt can be a valid trade-off, but undocumented and forgotten debt becomes an invisible risk.
When you postpone a fix, record it, explain it and make sure it has a path back into the team’s priorities.
🔸 TECHNICAL DEBT NEEDS OWNERSHIP
A shortcut without follow-up is not a strategy.
When we postpone a proper fix, we should clearly document:
▪️ What was compromised
▪️ Why the shortcut was necessary
▪️ What risks remain
▪️ When the issue should be revisited
▪️ Who is responsible for following up
Otherwise, the context disappears while the debt remains.
🔸 “WE WILL FIX IT LATER” IS NOT A PLAN
Backlogs are full of improvements that were supposed to happen “later.”
But later rarely arrives unless the work is visible, prioritized and assigned.
A forgotten fix can eventually become:
▪️ A recurring production incident
▪️ A fragile deployment process
▪️ A security vulnerability
▪️ A performance bottleneck
▪️ A confusing part of the codebase nobody wants to touch
The cost does not disappear. It compounds.
🔸 OWNERSHIP DOES NOT MEAN BLAME
This quote should not encourage a blame culture.
Developers do not control every deadline, budget or product decision.
Ownership means being transparent about the consequences of a compromise and helping the team make an informed decision.
You may not be able to fix everything immediately.
But you can avoid letting important problems disappear silently.
🔸 TAKEAWAYS
▪️ Temporary solutions should have explicit follow-up
▪️ Document the reason, risk and expected correction
▪️ Make technical debt visible to the whole team
▪️ Ownership is about responsibility, not personal blame
▪️ Do not promise “later” without creating a real plan
Every coder owns the debt of every fix they chose to forget.
