📨🏅 KAFKA CERTIFICATION now has a NEW IBM CONFLUENT path

Kafka recognition now has two very different paths.

November 6, 2026

🔸 TLDR

IBM now offers a progressive Confluent badge track alongside the traditional Confluent technical certifications.

They overlap, but they do not validate the same expertise.

▪️ Confluent certifications → role-based technical knowledge + exam

▪️ IBM badges → product knowledge + hands-on + client delivery + advocacy

And the traditional CCDAK/CCAAK certifications have not disappeared.

🔸 THE NEW IBM CONFLUENT PATH

The progression looks like this:

1️⃣ Confluent Sales Foundation Understand the offering, differentiators, client pain points and value.

⬇️

2️⃣ Confluent Intermediate Gain hands-on knowledge and demonstrate a technical use case.

⬇️

3️⃣ Confluent Practitioner Advanced Plan, deploy and configure Confluent solutions, perform basic administration and lead workshops, pilots or PoX.

⬇️

4️⃣ Confluent Practitioner Mastery Demonstrate deep expertise, strategic understanding, community contributions and technical leadership.

⚠️ Important: these IBM badges are primarily available to IBM employees and IBM Business Partners. Mastery is specifically targeted at IBMers.

🔸 WHAT ABOUT THE "OLD" CERTIFICATIONS?

They are still there.

The traditional Confluent path remains role-oriented:

▪️ CCDAK → Developer for Apache Kafka

▪️ CCAAK → Administrator for Apache Kafka

▪️ Confluent Cloud Certified Operator → Confluent Cloud architecture and operations

These credentials are based around certification exams.

There are also learning badges such as Apache Kafka Administration by Confluent, but completing a course badge is not the same validation mechanism as passing the CCAAK exam.

🔸 WHY IBM IS NOW IN THE PICTURE

IBM announced its agreement to acquire Confluent on December 8, 2025, in an $11B transaction.

The acquisition was completed on March 17, 2026, with IBM positioning Confluent's real-time data platform as a major component of its enterprise AI and data strategy.

The result is an interesting evolution:

Kafka expertise can now be recognized from two angles.

Technical specialization 🛠️ AND Client/product expertise 🤝

🔸 WHAT SHOULD DEVELOPERS DO?

If you build Kafka applications:

👉 CCDAK first.

It validates producers, consumers, Kafka APIs, streaming applications and architecture concepts.

The IBM Intermediate badge is interesting if you also need to demo solutions or work directly with clients, but it is not a replacement for CCDAK.

🔸 WHAT SHOULD CONSULTANTS DO?

A consultant benefits from combining both dimensions.

👉 Intermediate → Practitioner Advanced

➕

👉 CCDAK, CCAAK or Cloud Operator, depending on your specialization.

That combination says:

"I understand the technology AND I can deliver it with a client."

🔸 WHAT SHOULD ARCHITECTS DO?

Architects should avoid collecting badges without building breadth.

A strong path could be:

👉 Cloud Certified Operator for the platform view

👉 CCAAK or CCDAK for deeper technical grounding

👉 Practitioner Advanced/Mastery when client leadership is part of the role

🔸 TAKEAWAYS

Kafka certification did not simply get renamed.

We now have two complementary recognition models:

▪️ Confluent certifications = technical role expertise

▪️ IBM badges = product, delivery and client expertise

For developers: CCDAK remains the strongest starting point.

For consultants and architects: combining both tracks can tell a much stronger story.
