CODING TEAM THEORY: Bullseye Commits ๐ŸŽฏ

=>Celebrate them!

July 2, 2021

This pattern is relatively common in most teams,

but it often goes unrecognized ๐ŸŒ’: an engineer understands a problem ๐Ÿ’ก,

breaks down the project into smaller tasks ๐Ÿช“,

and submits code that has little room for improvement ๐Ÿ“ฆ.

Most likely, not all of the commits that make up the project will be Bullseyes.ย

But the ones that are, generally have a small to modest impact

and were thoroughly reviewed and approved on the first try. ๐Ÿฅ‡

Celebrate them! ๐Ÿฅณ

HOW TO RECOGNIZE IT

In practice, Bullseye Commits can be identified by when they were submitted

in regard to the deadline โ˜ ๏ธ, their impact, and how they were treated in the review process.

Generally, the code was started and completed in advance โŒ› of the deadline, with negligible churn.

The commitโ€™s Impact was small to modest in size and was then thoroughly reviewed. ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It was approved on the first try. ๐ŸŽฏ

In Bullseye Commits, code reviews are substantive.โœ…๐Ÿ’ช

WHAT TO DO

Recognize a clean bullseye in a stand-up ๐Ÿงโ€โ™‚๏ธ, or a simple note:๐Ÿท๏ธ

โ€œI saw that check-in, nice job!โ€๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Whether itโ€™s public or private, showing that you noticed and that you care will only reinforce this pattern. ๐Ÿ’ช

If thereโ€™s an engineer who regularly makes Bullseye Commits,

it may be helpful for others to understand how they approach projects.

Ask the engineer to do a lunch ๐Ÿ• and learn, or consider asking them

to provide feedback ๐Ÿค” on another engineerโ€™s work in the review process.
