🛡️☕ VIDOCQ: A SOVEREIGN JAKARTA EE runtime, with Java champion Antoine Sabot-Durand

· jakartaee

🔸 TL;DR

Vidocq is an open-source Jakarta EE Core Profile 11 and MicroProfile 7.1 runtime, built on JDK 25, with a very strong idea behind it:

▪️ standards first

▪️ sovereignty by design

▪️ zero external dependencies

▪️ 5,650 official TCK tests passing

▪️ still alpha, but already very interesting 👀

What makes Vidocq special is not “yet another Java framework.”

It is almost the opposite.

Vidocq tries to implement the specs faithfully instead of inventing a new programming model.

CDI, Jakarta REST, JSON-P/B, Config, Servlet, plus several MicroProfile specs are treated as contracts, validated by the TCK, not just marketing claims.

🔸 WHY THIS MATTERS

In modern Java, we often talk about productivity, abstraction and convenience.

But Vidocq brings back another conversation:

▪️ Can we build a runtime we can fully audit?

▪️ Can we reduce the dependency chain?

▪️ Can we stay portable through open standards?

▪️ Can a European open-source stack be credible at runtime level?

That is where the “sovereign” part becomes concrete.

Hosted on Codeberg, released under EUPL 1.2, EPL 2.0 and GPL 2.0, Vidocq is not only technical work. It is also a statement about control, transparency and independence.

🔸 Antoine's ROLE

The project is strongly connected to Antoine Sabot-Durand, Java Champion, IT Director at SCIAM, former CDI spec lead, and one of the people behind Vidocq.

From the first CDI experiment to the open-source runtime, this is a very Java-native story:

specs, TCKs, modules, compile-time generation, JPMS, JDK 25, and a clear refusal of unnecessary runtime magic.

🔸 TAKEAWAYS

▪️ Vidocq is for people who care about Jakarta EE and MicroProfile standards.

▪️ Zero dependency is not just minimalism; it is a security and auditability choice.

▪️ TCK passing matters because portability needs proof.

▪️ Alpha means: promising, but not something to oversell to beginners as “production ready.”

▪️ Sovereignty in software starts with understanding what actually runs in your stack.

Vidocq is early, but the direction is worth watching. 🚀
