📊[POLL] JAVA DEVS: Switch to FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEER?
📊[POLL] JAVA DEVS: Switch to FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEER?
More ownership, more clients, more pressure: would you switch?

Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is emerging as an interesting path for experienced developers.
You still need to understand code and production systems; but the job moves you much closer to the CLIENT and the BUSINESS problem.
Instead of receiving a well-defined ticket, you may need to understand a vague problem, scope the solution, build it, deploy it, explain it and own the outcome.
So, Java developers: would you make the move?
🔸 POLL OPTIONS
▪️ Yes: broader ownership 🚀
You want to go beyond implementing features: understand the problem, design the solution, deploy it and see its business impact directly.
▪️ No: I prefer core Java ☕
You enjoy software engineering, architecture and coding, but don't necessarily want permanent client-facing responsibility.
▪️ If pay matches pressure 💰
More autonomy and potentially higher compensation sound attractive; but only if they justify the ambiguity, urgency and client pressure.
▪️ It depends 🤷♂️
The company, clients, travel, autonomy, technical depth and actual expectations could completely change the answer.
💬 For Java developers, FDE could be less of a move away from engineering and more of a move toward engineering + consulting + product + ownership.
As Martin Fowler wrote:
“Any fool can write code that a computer can understand. Good programmers write code that humans can understand.”
Maybe the FDE adds one more requirement:
understand the humans before writing the code.
