Iāve often heard people say ānetworking only really works in personā and that online events are just for watching talks.
My own Java career proved the opposite, thanks to an online conference and one very important person: Bruno Souza.
We first āmetā at the Java Champions Conference, a fully online event. I wasnāt a speaker, organizer, or VIP--just a participant. But I decided I wouldnāt be a passive viewer.
Hereās what I did:
1ļøā£ I joined as many talks as I could
2ļøā£ I used my real name so people would recognize me
3ļøā£ I asked honest, thoughtful questions in the chat
4ļøā£I commented, encouraged speakers, and tried to add value for everyone
From Brunoās side, he later told me that as a speaker and moderator, he kept seeing:
āVincent, Vincent, Vincentā¦ā in session after session. š¤£
š That consistent, visible participation made me stand out (in a good way).
Over time, that led to:
ā¼ļø Real conversations after the event
ā¼ļø Mentorship and guidance
ā¼ļø Growing inside a strong community
ā¼ļø Becoming an Oracle ACE & vExpert
And eventually⦠working with Bruno and welcoming him twice to Lille in person š«š·
All of this started from an online event.
š” What Iāve learned about online networking for developers:
- Use a recognizable profile (real name, real face)
- Be a positive, helpful presence in chats
- Ask questions you genuinely have ā others likely have them too
- Thank the speakers and acknowledge their effort
- After the talk, follow up on LinkedIn or X and mention the session
- Share screenshots or photos of you watching, and tag the speaker and conference
- If itās live, share the link and invite others to join
Online events may feel harder for networking than ināperson ones.
But theyāre also full of opportunity if you show up, contribute, and make yourself visible in a respectful and constructive way.
Thanks to the Java community, to Bruno Souza, and to the great people Iāve met through mentorship and participation (Luiz Real, Thiago Gonzaga, FranƧois Martin, Csilla SzĆ”ntó and other great people...), Iāve added a lot of value to my work and my career. And this is just the beginning. šā
If youāre a developer watching talks from home:
š Donāt just watch. Participate. Thatās how doors open.
How do you stay visible and engaged during online tech events? Iād love to hear your approach š
