☕🔖 Do you use INTELLIJ BOOKMARKS?

You know the gutter where you normally set a breakpoint? 👀There is another marker I use there: a BOOKMARK.

October 17, 2026

🔸 TLDR

A breakpoint says:

▪️ "STOP execution here." 🛑

A bookmark says:

▪️ "I want to COME BACK here." 🔖

On my IntelliJ setup, I can quickly add one from the gutter with Ctrl + Click.

And this is surprisingly useful when exploring a large codebase.

Instead of keeping 15 tabs open or trying to remember:

"Where was that method again?" 😅

I bookmark:

▪️ An entry point I am investigating

▪️ A suspicious condition

▪️ A mapper or service I need later

▪️ An important configuration line

▪️ Different steps of a call flow

You can also use:

▪️ F11 → anonymous bookmark

▪️ Ctrl + F11 → mnemonic bookmark

▪️ Alt + 2 → open the Bookmarks window

Mnemonic bookmarks are even nicer: assign a number or letter and use them as little navigation anchors through the codebase. 🧭

🔸 TAKEAWAYS

▪️ Breakpoints are for debugging

▪️ Bookmarks are for navigation

▪️ They help when exploring unfamiliar or complex code

▪️ They can reduce tab overload

▪️ A tiny IntelliJ feature that is easy to overlook
